Review: Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ Mini Tool Kit

Topeak’s Ratchet Rocket mini-tool has been a long-standing favorite, (read our previous review here) and the NTX+ iteration of the mini tool kit is my favorite to date. Centered around a mini ratcheting tool, the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ is stuffed to the brim with features and functionality, making it an ideal compact tool for traveling and space is at a premium.

The mini tool kit comes snuggly packed into a protective case, making it easy to stash any where. The compact size can be a drawback, as it’s so small it’s easy to misplace — which can be frustrating as I use it quite frequently. The solution? I made a special spot for it — totally worth it, as it’s my go-to while traveling.

In use

The NTX+ iteration of the Ratchet Rocket replaces the tire levers found in the base model and adds a torque wrench as well as a chain tool. For me, this functionality is more useful, as I’m picky with what goes on my person or on the bike. For base camp usage though, it’s perfect.

Everything is so cleverly integrated that I initially was bummed it “didn’t” have the bit extender — except that it does — it just took a minute to realize it was integrated and doubles as the handle for the chain tool.

As previously mentioned, I’m too much of a weight weenie to carry the Ratchet Rocket on rides, but it lives in the “garage” in my van, and is my go-to tool for wrenching on bikes at the trailhead and on road trips. I love using bits with ratcheting tools, and while the initial sticker price can seem high, the mini tool covers such a wide range of applications that for many cyclists it might be the only toolset required. (there’s also the less pricey option)

Adding the torque wrench to the chain tool adds a bit of leverage, while the ratchet driver is used to push the pin.

I have a portable torque wrench from Lezyme I received as a Christmas gift. While it’s handy, it mostly lives on my workbench until it’s needed. With the Ratchet Rocket, it’s a bit redundant, as the Topeak tool is more useful and contains more features.

Admittedly, this is a bit of a silly photo. I was testing the torque wrench function — for the record, on MTBs I find myself mostly using torque wrenches fastening stem bolts.

Of all the Mini Tool Kits Topeak offers, the NTX+ is my favorite model yet. If you’re looking for gift ideas, it would be a fantastic X-mas gift for your favorite mountain biker, road, or gravel cyclist. The Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ sells for $79.95. If you don’t need the additional functionality, the base model Ratchet Rocket Lite DX comes in at half the sticker price. For more info, visit Topeak.com.
