If you’re looking to dial in the cock pit of your bike, the Spank Split stem is a nice option with a wide range of lengths and sizes. For those looking to accessorize their ride, they’re also available in a range of colors. I recently became aware of the limited edition gold model; overcome by its “gold-ness” I had to acquire one. (insert Austin Powers Goldmember Meme here)

Features
- Available in 31.6 and 35mm bar options (31.6mm tested)
- 33 / 38 / 43 / 48 lengths (33mm featured)
- 34mm stack height
- Listed weight 133g (33m)
- Forge aluminum alloy, machined and peened finish
Stems are difficult items to quantify. A reliable stem either holds your handlebars to your steerer securely, or it doesn’t. If a stem slips on the steerer, that’s a no-go. If one ever breaks, that’s obviously a negative as well. I’ve experienced both with stems and sometimes grip comes down to the proper application of friction paste. Having run Spank Split Stems on a range of bikes for the last few seasons, (though the new gold model has yet to be fully put through the wringer) they’ve held both steerer and bars securely.

Viewed from the top, the Split Stem is wide at the bars, providing a confidence-inspiring view while looking downwards.

The only downside of the Split Stem (and any of the other low-stack designs) is that they look a bit off if you want to run more than 30mm of spacers on your steerer. Some headset designs feature a taller cone top ring that takes the place of spacers for a more aesthetically pleasing stack.

The short stack height was ideal for a recent project build. I recently traded a 34 fork for a 36 for a project build, and when the steerer was on the short side, the short, 34mm stack height just barely fit. In this case, the Split Stem was an ideal solution that allowed full stem/steerer overlap.

Bottom line: like the rest of the Spank Industries lineup, the Split Stem is a solid component and a great match for a lot of setups. With a wide range of colors, if you’re already running Spank bars – adding the matching stem is a no-brainer for a sharp-looking cockpit.
And yes, I may just have to add the gold Spoon pedals when they’re back in stock.
