On the Trail

It can be challenging to find an effective waterproof outer layer that isn’t too bulky and doesn’t leave you ironically drenched in sweat. We often discuss the pros and cons of breathability and the level of waterproofing, and for trail riding, our priority is on breathability and movement. The Syncline jacket is light and breathable with vents that help manage sweat effectively, demonstrated to us during a recent 10-mile ride.

The Showers Pass commuter models like the Elite and Century feature a longer, dropped back hemline that protects one’s backside from the constant stream of water from commuting. They’re great in full bike commuter mode, but we’re fond of the Syncline and its multisport cut. We don’t always want to look like a bike geek, which makes for a more versatile piece that transitions easily to an outer layer for hiking or day-to-day wear.

I’m a fan of the bright light blue color and its reflective trim that adds visibility when we’re racing to squeeze in rides after work before the darkness fully sets in.

For rainy days, the hood is not quite big enough to fit over my helmet, but is adjustable and can be worn comfortably underneath. When tested in brief, dumping rain, I found it held up and kept me dry.

Fit and Sizing

I chose my usual size, medium. I am a dress size 6, so I could probably get away with a small, especially since it sits just above my hips, but I prefer to have more room for layering underneath. Showers Pass tops run a little large; if you want a more fitted look, say for gravel rides, it might be worth trying on the next size down.

In Conclusion

This is a versatile performance piece. It fits the bill for mountain biking but is also well suited for hikes, cross-country skiing, and rainy-day grocery shopping.

The Syncline CC Jacket lists for $152, but at the time of this post, it is a sale. Snap one up before they’re gone at ShowersPass.com or shop for Showers Pass gear at retail partner CompetitiveCyclist.com.
