Review: Ryders Eyewear Roam Fyre Sunglasses

Ryders Eyewear Roam Fyre Sunglasses

Like the best of the Ryders Eyewear lineup, the Roam Fyre sunglasses feature tint adjusting photochromic lenses and an antiFog coating. It was the larger eye coverage and semi-rim design that intreged me the most, and after spending some time running the Roam Fyre glasses, they’ve proven to be a great option for protective eyewear in PNW riding conditions.

The Ryders Shore goggles have been a long-time favorite, (see our review here) and with the near goggle-level overage, enjoyed clear vision for miles with the Roam Fyre sunglasses. They nail all the features you might want in a pair of protective eyewear: lightweight photochromic lenses with high-quality optics for eye protection , a customizable fit, and nose pads that don’t slide down when things get sweaty.

And speaking of sweat, the Roam features one of the best antiFog coatings out there; in addition, the lack of an upper frame helps take the antiFog qualities to the next level.

The lack of an upper frame adds visibility and boosts the already great anti-fog qualities of the Roam Fyre sunglasses.

On the trail

We’ve been fans of all the Ryders eye protection we’ve used in the past. Our favorite models stood out with performance features many “higher end” sunglasses lack, namely the photochromic lenses that darken when you ride out of the woods and into bright sunlight, and an anti-fog coating that is almost mandatory in our PNW humid riding conditions.

Our newest eyewear model, Enoki the van-dwelling Adventure Cat.

The anti-fog coating works extremely well, and on those misty, foggy climbs where other glasses fog instantly when you’re stopped, the Ryders glasses remain clear. Over the years, I’ve found that clean, well maintained eye wear stays fog free the best. After a ride, I always use running water to make sure small particles are rinsed off to ensure I don’t accidentally push them around with my microfiber cloth, causing scratches. However, the toughest place to clean on sunglasses is the top near the frame. As this is where condensation will inevitably begin; I often pop the lens out to clean them. This where the Roam Fyre shines the brightest. The frame on the bottom of the lens provides protection and adds structure, but forgoing it at the top eases cleaning dramatically.

UV protection sunglasses are even more crucial for winter sports, as the sun reflects off of snow and is extra bright. With the additional size, I found the Roam to work well in off-the-bike applications as well.
