The second McLaren Short Track Challenge was held Saturday in San Francisco’s McLaren Park. A fundraiser for the McLaren Bike Park Project, the short track cross country event is unique in that it’s the only sanctioned mountain bike race held in the city. In addition to the Short Track, the event included a trials area, box jump demo and cargo bike race.
Depending on their category, racers ran 2-5 laps each, climbing 350 feet of elevation through single and double track hard pack. Although the course features a brief paved connector section, for an XC course in the the middle of a major city, it’s pretty fun. Laps are only about 2.5 miles in length, but the fast pace is extremely demanding physically, and it’s a painful hour of pedaling the bike.

Although the total amount of trail mileage in the park is fairly minimal, it’s hard to beat the views.
