We utilize a variety of containers to store water in our camper van, but it’s hard to beat the clean taste of ice cold water from a stainless steel water bottle. One solution we found for going plastic-free was the Watersy 128oz stainless steel water bottle.
We had searched for a number of plastic-free solutions including a 3.5 gallon restaurant grade stainless steel water container. However, we liked the idea of an easy to carry high volume stainless steel bottle, as we could carry it into grocery stores that offer bulk water dispensing, or even a fast food restaurant for easy refills. The strap does make it more incognito, and we resemble those folks at the gym that carry monsterous sized water bottles, and it feels quite stealthy.

On the road
We looked at a range of one gallon(128oz) stainless steel jugs, and the Watersy included a neoprene protective case with a shoulder strap that I found highly appealing. It facilitates carrying it into stores/restaurants for refilling, and will hopefully reduce unsightly dents.
Most of our road trips are 3-4 day jaunts, and we utilize two 1 gallon jugs our drinking water on the road. (we carry additional water containers for cooking and cleaning in the van as well) Before hitting the road, we fill our two stainless steel jugs with ice water, and happily enjoy ice cold water over the next several days.
Admittedly, the stainless steel jug features a plastic lid, but as we store it upright, we have not observed any change in the taste of the water.
The only downside to speak of is how long it takes to refill a 20oz water container – the water flow could be a bit faster. I can’t complain too much though, considering many similar bottles cost $40 to $99, and do the exact same thing. And they don’t include the bonus carry case, which adds significant value.
