On the trail
We’re big fans of the classic beanie. Typically defined as a head-hugging brimless knit cap, it’s a classic accessory for Pacific Northwest life. The three-layer acrylic knit is comfortable and warm, and it’s surprisingly breathable, especially considering the fact it’s hiding a waterproof membrane inside.
Best for hikes and post-ride activities, we recently wore the beanies while going a bit more active to see how breathable it really was. Recently we tried them on a trail run on a cool morning. It was fine initially but once we were really moving it became too warm; it was nice to have when we slowed the pace to walking and our temperature came down.
I’ve also worn it for trail building. While it was great for the hike in, I found it too be warm once I was swinging tools, switching back to my go-to baseball cap.
The Crosspoint socks are a game-changer for our wet weather riding activities, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say the beanie takes it to this level. It is definitely more of a post-ride lifestyle piece, as it gets warm quickly if you’re active. That said, if you’re a beanie fan that likes to hike in cool and wet environments, you will want to check it out. It’s become my favorite new accessory and with the temperatures still on the cool side, I find myself reaching for it anytime I step outside. Once our road trip adventures continue, it’s going to be a must-have accessory paired with an insulated jacket for campfire times.
I happen to love radar beanies with brims too, so here’s to hoping the team creates one of those down the road…
Fit
Both Inga and I enjoyed the fit, as well as the general shape of the beanie. Showers Pass offers the Crosspoint beanie in one size, and with a head circumference of 56cm, I found it to fit on the relaxed side. Inga’s head is much smaller, but she has a full head of hair and prefers a relaxed fit on caps that don’t mess with her hair a lot.
That said, it isn’t sized to pair with a helmet if you’re looking for a riding cap that is waterproof. And that’s ok, as Showers Pass already offers the waterproof Event cap that’s ideal for this application.
The Showers Pass Crosspoint Waterproof Beanie is available in three colors and sells for $39.00. Get yours at ShowersPass.com or support the site by shopping for Showers Pass gear at retail partner REI.com.
