Review: Robert Axle Project Tire Plugs

The Robert Axle Project is a company that specializes in making hub axles. They launched a cool, stealthy tire plug tool that fits securely into the end of their 15mm front axles. The plug is preloaded with a bacon strip, making it quick and easy to access for a puncture repair in your tubeless tire.

Features

  • Machined from 6061 Aluminum
  • Fits all 15mm RAP and 15mm Chris King thru axles (M15 and M14)
  • Made in Oregon
  • Includes 5 bacon strips
  • 8g with a bacon strip loaded!

On the Trail

The crew at Robert Axle Project sent me home with a set of the new axles with the tire plug, and I’ve been running them on my Santa Cruz Tallboy trail bike. I also have one mounted on my Transition Spire enduro/freeride bike.

The plug assembly protrudes slightly, allowing for easy grip during removal, but doesn’t stick out enough to be an issue. The o-ring holds it in the fork securely, and I haven’t experienced any issues with it coming loose.

While I haven’t had to utilize the bacon strip for a puncture repair, both strips are encased in plastic to keep them from drying and usable.

We see more and more riders on the trail with a minimal amount of gear, and we’re fans of this sentiment as well. However, we’re still careful to carry the means to address a basic mechanical issue or fix a tire puncture. The Robert Axle Project tire plugs are a great option for making sure you have a bacon strip on hand, and if you’re in the market for a new front axle, you may as well add value to that purchase with bacon strip storage. In addition, the upgrade for the Lighting Axle is available separately with the axle plug kit, running $34. Axle+Plug kits start at $76.00.
