On the bike
The performance of this jacket is impressive. does a great job keeping you warm, despite its minimal heft- it’s ridiculously lightweight, and packs down fairly small. And it does indeed breathe well.

I’ve worn the jacket in a wide range of rides, from eMTB to mountain biking, to mixed terrain cross country, road, and adventure rides. I find it works best when there is ample wind to help vent body heat, I did get quite warm on a sustained climb, mountain biking. Its easy to get sweaty on our humid fall days in the PNW; the slower, grinding pace on the mountain bike doesn’t assist much with ventilation in comparison to the higher average speed typically carried on pavement and gravel rides. Fortunately, once the trail pointed downwards, I was able to cool off, and the sweat was wicked away very quickly.
The Pearl Izumi Expedition Pro Alpha Jacket is aimed squarely at gravel and road riders—and it performs exceptionally well in both arenas. The fabric feels like a step forward compared to cycling outerwear from just a few seasons ago. Most of my cool-weather gravel jerseys weigh considerably more, yet this jacket manages to provide impressive warmth and protection with minimal bulk. The advanced weave gives the material a textured feel that hides a surprising amount of breathable insulation and weather resistance—ideal for long-distance rides and mixed-terrain adventures where conditions can change fast.

I’ve been pairing it with a short-sleeve jersey, arm warmers, and a nylon vest, which keeps me comfortable despite a wide range of temperatures.
Two decades ago, one of my first investments in quality cycling gear was a Pearl Izumi chamois and windbreaker. The chamois has long since worn thin and been retired, but that simple black windbreaker is still hanging in my gear closet—proof of Pearl Izumi’s lasting craftsmanship. I don’t wear it often, but it’s held up remarkably well over the years. With that history in mind, I have high hopes for the Expedition Pro Alpha Jacket. I’ve been hand-washing it carefully, hoping to ensure it delivers the same kind of long-term durability as my first Pearl Izumi purchase.
