Outside Van specializes in customizing Sprinter Vans and converting them into mobile adventure base camps. Located east of Portland, Oregon, they’ve been creating custom adventuremobiles for the #vanlife for almost two decades.
Recently relaunching their website, they’ve streamlined the process of customizing vans, breaking it down into three levels of customization in order to make it easier to get into your own dream machine.
Custom packages start anywhere from $39k and range to $100k (van not included) for a fully customized van conversion. Although it sounds expensive, the final product is essentially a made-to-order mobile tiny-home comparable to a top level RV, except these vans can be parked almost anywhere. And if you choose the new 4×4 Sprinter, you’re getting a much more fuel efficient and capable rig.
I met up with Christopher Schey (marketing main man at Outside Van) at the Fat Tire Farm to check out a recent Core Van Conversion built on the Sprinter platform.
The OSV base level core conversion offers plenty of room to haul cargo and gear, with a basic bed platform that is removable. The minimal configuration allows camper van functionality while still being useful as a cargo van, as each of the components can be removed.
The base camp package includes their OSV Pre runner bumper, load lights in the gear area, OSV Rear Step bumper and 3 panel bed platform. Two ceiling fans help regulate temperature in conjunction with the insulated interior. Tinted windows with snap on blinds allow light in or out.
If the owner decides to add additional features like a galley/ kitchen they can be installed at a later date, an upgrade common with their customer base. On a visit to the factory floor, we met a happy customer that had stopped by mid-trip, with his entire life piled in the garage next to the van while work was being performed.
All Outside Vans start out in the Core line, with additional features built in as requested. Conversions are labor intensive, with timelines of 4-7 weeks for a core van conversion, and the waiting list is long, so we recommend reaching out early.
