MRP showed off a new chain ring design at this year’s Interbike Trade Show, which takes a unique approach to rings with chain retention qualities. As opposed to adopting the narrow-wide design pioneered by SRAM, their unique tooth pattern goes from side to side like a wave. By adding lateral stress on the chain, it engages it more snugly in order to increase chain security.

In addition, the side to side design offers more space for mud and debris. MRP says it puts less stress on the chain plates which should help with durability and wear on both the ring and chain. Compatible with 8-11 speed chains, it’s currently offered in a SRAM compatible direct mount, with Shimano/ 104 spaced rings available soon in 28-36t options.
The Wave Ring explained as seen at the Interbike Trade Show.
We’ve had more issues with chain stretch than side to side wear on our personal bikes in the last few seasons due to more out of the saddle pedaling on rides with our one-by set ups, and are looking forward to giving one of these a try in the near future. Wave Rings will retail for $79.95. Check it out at MRPBike.com.
