Damn, bike parks are expensive propositions. We’re so close to having a legit bike park in the Bay Area, but before that happens, there are some serious fund raising hurdles that need to be cleared. SF’s McLaren Bike Park recently received a $250,000 grant, but in reality, that’s just the amount needed to really kickstart the fund raising process. To raise funds for the Park, Dan Scheider and the SF Urban Riders(including yours truly, who is currently working on an event flyer and website) are putting on the first SF MTB Festival this fall. If the event goes well, a good amount of funds will be generated towards breaking grown on phase one of the park construction.
The Stafford Lake Bike Park in Novato is at a similar point in regards to raising funds. According to this article in the Marin Independent Journal, Stafford Lake’s bike park fund is now up to $208k, and still needs another $250,000 or so to break ground. They expect costs to reach at least $850,000. The country is now accepting corporate sponsorships— maybe someone in the Lucas camp would be interested in creating the first Star Wars themed bike park? Maybe with some Indiana Jones themed areas? Either way, we need a Kickstarter type site for bike park funds going already.
Where’s the first Bay Area Bike Park going to be? SF, or Marin?
