For short, high paced rides in the Oakland hills, I’ve taken to running a water bottle and leaving the hydration pack at home. There are a few drinking fountains in the area, so I’m able to get away with only carrying one bottle and refilling it periodically. The downside to running a water bottle has been dirt and dust on the spout. Even with a down tube fender mounted, it can get pretty gross, and who knows what kinds of bacteria get splashed onto your water bottle. When I came across the Autospout Water Bottles from Avex, it seemed a perfect solution to keeping a bottle sanitary, and had to learn more. Fortunately for me, the folks at Avex were nice enough to send me a few bottles to try out.
I’m currently alternating between the standard 24oz bottle and the insulated bottles, and they’ve been pretty great. The Autospout functions extremely well, and pops open with a push of the button. Not only can I grab it and drink with one hand, I’m not getting a mouthful of dust or having to squirt out a bit of water to clear the dirt out.
The bottles didn’t have any weird plastic odor or taste that old school bottles always had, and they’re made using BPA free materials, so you can rest easy knowing you’re not getting exposed to any carcinogens. I’ve been taking advantage of the insulation and running ice cubes a lot, and the bottles are easy to clean. I’m totally digging them.
